Summary

His father had come to Cardiff from Georgeham in the Ilfracombe area of North Devon (b 1853 Georgeham) and became a policeman, rising to the rank of Superintendent. His mother was b 1852 Hazelbeach Pembrokeshire. The family kept contact with Devon and took holidays there.

Was a volunteer in the R.A.M.C. (medical corps) from 1909. During WWI, he was conscripted from his position as a teacher at Allensbank School and served mainly at Howard Gardens (Headquarters) Hospital in Cardiff. He was promoted from sergeant-major to quartermaster with honorary rank of lieutenant on 24 August 1915.

Trained as a pupil-teacher, which included study at Cardiff University where he graduated. Entered the teaching profession and mainly served at Allensbank Boys Elementary School, he was appointed headmaster of Llandaff Primary School in 1937.

Lived in Gabalfa (Heathfield Place) and then near Roath Park (Windemere Ave; house called "Brierfield" after his wife's parents' area of origin). His siblings also lived nearby in Roath Park.

He married Mary E Dugdale of Cardiff, also a trained teacher. They had two children: Mary and Eddie, born 10 years apart.

Heavy smoker - died suddenly.
