Full tree

Summary

Her parents had come from the Burnley (Brierfield) area of Lancashire to set up a jam factory in the Leckwith Road area of Cardiff.

Mary was the eldest of many siblings and was known as "Sis" for sister. She was a heavy smoker; as eldest of her siblings, she had strong opinions but was not always correct (known as "duff gen" behind her back).

Sis was trained as a pupil-teacher at Cardiff and at Swansea Teacher Training College and taught in primary school (including at Gelligear) before being married. More on pupil-teacher training

She married Charles Hayward, a teacher at a primary school (Allensbank) in Cardiff, latterly headmaster of Llandaff Council School.

After marriage, she lived in Gabalfa (Heathfield Place) and then near Roath Park (Windemere Ave; house called "Brierfield" after her parents' area of origin). Several of her siblings lived in Cardiff (Dorothy, Gladys, Horner's widow) while some had emigrated (Gwen to Seattle; Parker to South Africa).

They had two children: Mary and Eddie, born 10 years apart. She taught Mary to read herself, so she was put in a class at school with older pupils - which was not without drawbacks.

After her husband's death, she moved to a bungalow in Whitchurch to be nearer her daughter and son.

She cooked welsh cakes, made toffee (consistency of glass) and marmalade.
