Summary

Horner is an occupational name: Horners made bowls and cups out of horn and appear to have worked for the Cistercian and Augustinian monasteries in Yorkshire.

The Horner family, from the Burnsall region (Yorkshire) moved to the Burnley, Barrowford area of Lancashire. They were tradesmen (shoemaker, inn-keeper, grocer) and farmers. They married local women, some of whose siblings were in trade (chemical manufacturing).

Sarah Horner's g-g-grandfather was also g-grandfather to Charles Horner of Halifax, the jeweller.

Sarah Horner married Parker Dugdale from Barrowford and then accompanied him to Cardiff where he set up the South Wales Jam and Marmalade Company.

They had many children, the eldest being Mary Eveline (known as "sis"). Several of their children (and grand-children) had Horner as a name, presumably because the Horner family were quite prosperous.
