5: Jesse Smith= Jane Phillips     Thomas Jones= Margaret Davies
4: Alfred Smith and Sarah Jane Jones
3: Children: Ivor, Bert, Wyndham, Stanley, Percy, Myra
The Smith family was based at the Somerset village of Pensford St. Thomas for generations -- often as blacksmiths. Jesse Smith moved (before age 22) to the Eastern Valleys of the S Wales coalfield - Risca eventually- to work as a miner. He married Jane Phillips from Nunney (near Frome).
Alfred (b 6 Jan 1868 Risca) was the eldest son of Jesse and Jane and worked initially as a coalminer, as did his younger brother Jesse. Alfred married Sarah Jane Jones (family originally farmers in the lower Usk valley) in 1891.
When their first son (Ivor) died in 1893, Alfred moved to the USA (1893-96) to the Cleveland area where their next son (also named Ivor) was born. On his return, he established a grocery business in Abercynon helped by his children (Ivor, Bert, Wyndham, Percy, Stanley and Myra). Ivor was killed in WW I [Private Alfred Ivor Smith, Royal Fusiliers Died: Saturday 7 October 1916: Thiepval Memorial, battle of Somme, also recorded Abercynon (WMR 6727). link]. See also handwritten account in family bible: here.
Sarah Jane died (5 Sept 1908), soon after Myra was born (6 April 1905). Alfred then married in 1920 Mary Emma Gulliver (Minnie) Chaloner (nee Wall) (known as Nana, b 21 Sept 1877) who already had children of her own (Billy, Marjorie and Gwyn[Down's]). Alfred died 30 Dec 1951.
Alfred set up a bakery in Maesycwmmer in 1923. He lived for a year near the bakery while he had a large house (Glanwern) built in Summerfield Hall Lane, and he also built 4 additional houses nearby in 1935.
Stanley and Wyndham worked in the bakery, Bert had a garage business (Glam-Mon Motors in Ystrad Mynach) and Percy worked for Barclays Bank, latterly in Enfield. Myra had a dress shop before marrying Einon (Water board).
