ABERCYNON'S LOSS. FUNERAL OF MR. TOM JONES, CARNETOWN STORES. Quite a
gloom was cast over Abercynon on the death of a very faithful friend
and stalwart inhabitant, in the person of Mr. Tom Jones, Carnetown
Stores. Mr. Jones was a native of Pontygwaith[sic, Pontywaun], and sojourned to
Abercynon 38 years ago, when he founded and established the Carnetown
Stores. He worked very arduously and conscientiously upon all the
public and religious bodies of Abercynon and neighbourhood, and had
served as chairman of the British and Foreign Bible Society since its
inception. He was a most stalwart worker and faithful worshipper at
the English (Cong.) Church, and always created that spiritual atmosphere
and influence in all the tasks he undertook to perform, so that
it could be said of him: "Thou art a man of God." He served as deacon
of the church and superintendent of the Sunday school for very many
years, and faithfully acted as Sunday school teacher for 38 years. By
his death the church and Sunday school will lose a powerful pillar of
strength.
The late Mr. Jones also served as member of the Mountain Ash
Urban District Council for several years, and retired through pressure
of business. He also filled the office of chairman of the Abercynon
Chamber of Trade. His demise will indeed be a great loss to the
community at large. We extend to the widow and family our sympathy in
their sad bereavement.
The funeral took place on Monday at St.
Cynon's Churchyard. The bearers were Messrs. George Stone, Fred Blake,
Fred Edwards, John Yorath, George Matthews, Tom Hughes, Gwilym Smith
and Tom Joy, Cardiff, all of whom are deacons of the English (Cong.)
Church, Abercynon. A very touching and impressive service was held at the
house, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Morgan Jenkins. The mourners
at the house were: The widow; Misses Doris and Lilian Jones, London
(daughters); Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Jones (son and daughter-in-law);
Mr. James Jones, Pontygwaith (brother); Mrs. Jones, Bargoed
(sister-in-law); Mrs. Williams, Bargoed (niece); Miss Eva Battram,
Fife-street; Mrs. E. H. Carslake, Mrs. E. R. Battram, Mrs. Jack
Battram, and Miss Mary Battram, Park Newydd; Mrs. W. R. Battram,
Penrhiwceiber (sister-in-laws), and Mrs. W. B. Thomas, Port Talbot.
  The mourners following the cortege were: Dr. D. Thomas, Abercynon;
Rev. Morgan Jenkins, Rev. Bloomer (vicar of Abercynon), Rev. Jones
(Mynydd Seion), Rev. Jefferies, Abercynon, Rev. Williams, Moriah Baptist
Church; Misses Doris and Lilian Jones (daughters); Mr. and Mrs.
Clifford Jones (son and daughter-in-law); Mr. James Jones,
Pontygwaith[sic, Pontywaun] (brother); Mr. Alfred Smith, Ystrad Mynach
(brother-in-law): Mr. H. Battram, Mr. W. R. Battram, Mr. Jack Battram,
Mr. E. R. Battram, Abercynon, and Mr. Bertie Smith, Pontygwaith[sic, Maesycwmmer]
(nephew); Mr. E. B. Carslake, Abercynon (brother-in-law); Mr. E.
Carslake, Abercynon (nephew); Mr. Stanley Smith, Pontygwaith (nephew),
and Mr. Granville Jones, Pontygwaith; Mr. Jones, County School master,
Bargoed; Mr. Arthur Powell, Cardiff (nephew); Mr. Eynon Thomas,
Pontygwaith (nephew-in-law) ; Mr. F. A. Phillips, Merthyr; Mr. Trevor
Phillips, Dowlais, Mr. Martin Evans, Merthyr, and Mr. J. Isaac,

At the church a service was held,
conducted by the Rector of Nelson and the Rev. Davies. During the
service the Rev. Morgan Jenkins eulogised the genial character, life
and work of Mr. Jones. At the graveside the burial service was
conducted by the Rector of Nelson, Rev. Davies and Rev. J. H.
Bloomer, vicar of Abercynon.
  Numerous beautiful wreaths and floral
tributes were received from relatives and friends.
