John Lovelin Williams (son of John Williams,
shoemaker, and Lavinia) was born in 1814 and christened at the parish
church of St. Dogmaels. Lavinia Bevans was from a S Pembs family who
produced several surgeons and who incorporated local surnames (eg
Gwyther, Lovelin(g), Carew) as second names.
John Lovelin was apprenticed as a sailor at age 14 and
became mate by age 31, sailing mainly coastal routes out of Swansea.
Sarah Ladd (daughter of William Ladd, farmer at Trewidwal- west of St. Dogmaels) was born about 1825. Several Ladd families were based around Cardigan (as farmer, tailor, saddler, joiner), particularly at Llangoedmor. Sarah was working as a servant at Swansea by 1841 and married John L Williams at Swansea in 1844. They had three daughters: Lavinia, Sarah Jane and Martha (born 1849 at Swansea).
By 1847, John was mate on a Newport registered vessel and they may have moved to Newport 1849 on. In the 1851 census, Sarah and her three daughters were living at Newport and John Williams had died (by drowning according to family memory; so between 1849 and 1851). Sarah married Captain Thomas Nicholas (originally from St. Dogmaels) at Newport in 1854 and then had a son John William Nicholas.
Martha lived in Dock Street, Newport, describing her occupation as clerk, her step-brother John had a chandlery business. In 1881, she married a near neighbour, David Michael, who retired from the sea to run the Vulcan Hotel. They had one son David (latterly David Frederick Albert, known as Bert) born in Bristol in 1882. They lived in Newport (York Place) after retiring from the hotel.
The St. Dogmaels link continued since Bert married Beatrice Matilda Davies whose father William Saunders Davies farmed at Monington (west of St. Dogmaels) and then moved to Old Castle farm (on the bank of the Teifi opposite to St. Dogmaels).
We have inherited paintings of Sarah alone and of Sarah holding Martha. Also we have a chair (originally one of 4) made by her uncle Thomas Ladd and dated 1844.
