Parents were David Michael (first mate on a ship trading with Newport)
and Martha Williams (daughter of a (deceased) mariner) who married
quite late in life.
David (Bert) was born in Bristol (to avoid notice about time from marriage)
Spent some time in West Wales - so had a basic knowledge of Welsh.
Lived in Newport: Vulcan Hotel, Dock St., then York Place
Attended Newport High School (one of first pupils)
Worked for Post Office as a clerk.
He married Beatrice Matilda Davies (Tilly) (daughter of
a farmer) in 1909 in Cardigan. She was welsh-speaking.
After marriage they lived in York Place next door to his parents.
Children: David Parry Martin (Parry), Cynthia Mary Margaret (Mary),
Alexander Temple Saunders (Alec)
Was in St. Woolos choir (eldest son David also)
1915-1919 served as gunner in Royal Field Artillery, promoted
bombardier 7 May 1916. Landed at Havre Oct 1917, wounded at Cambrai and
returned to England Dec 1917. [no: 741175]
Moved to Glasllwch Road - house bombed 30/31-5-1941 during WWII - he
was in hallway with ARP helmet on: suffered hearing loss (wife Tilly
under dining room table was OK).
