This officer has been with this unit since its formation over 2 1/2 years ago, and has given consistenly outstanding service. His untiring efforts in the NW Europe campaign, from 7 June 44 to 8 May 45, have been an ispiration to all men under his command. He had discharged abnormal responsibilities successfully, always showing ceaseless devotion to duty and leadership of high order. He was responsible, with his Section, for the provision of American ammunition under the heading of "Red Ball", to the US Forces engaged in the Ardennes offensive, and played a major part in the ammunition provisioning of the 2nd Army from a site near Wall Bridge over the Meuse. Although with a broken arm sustained in an accident in January and with personal domestic problems due to the illness of his wife, he has always done more than his share of the long hours necessary in the work of an Ammunition Section, and by his personal cheerfulness, set an example to his men.

Demobbed 1946 with rank of Major.
  Some anecdotes:
A journalist reported how brave the ROAC in Normandy were to be sleeping amidst crates of high explosives. DPMM's view was that the crates provided protection against shrapnel - while a direct hit would be fatal anyway.
DPMM also was of the opinion that calvados [French apple brandy] killed more soldiers than the Germans did.

Post war

Amateur dramatics: acted in and directed plays

Keen crossword solver and setter (under name EGMA for the Listener)

Book reviewer for Western Mail; wrote scripts for BBC Wales radio programmes (humorous).

Collector of Staffordshire Portrait Figures.

Regular church goer (Church in Wales) - read lesson at Sunday morning service.

Headmaster of Cathays High School for Boys and then Newport High School.
At Newport HS, his remit was to combine the Boys and Girls Schools (on the same site in Queens Hill but hitherto separate).
Subsequent reorganisation combined Newport HS with nearby Secondary Modern Schools to form a Comprehensive School. This was moved to a new site at Bettws and he was headmaster of one of the largest schools in the UK.

Active with headmasters association and conference: CBE 1972.
