His father (also David Michael) was based near Newquay as an agricultural labourer and sawyer. Family tradition has it that his father spent some time at sea [many "inland" labourers helped out with the annual herring "harvest" in Cardigan Bay].
David Michael had an older sister (Mary) who did not marry and remained with her parents at Gilfachrheda. He was bilingual.
David Michael (b 1839 at Mydroilyn) qualified as a mariner. He went to sea in 1854, with mates ticket in 1869 and captain (ordinary) ticket in 1874. [Certificate quotes date of birth: 22 July 1840 at New Quay]. Served on many vessels, mainly as first mate, with a relatively long period on the SS Cincora which mainly traded between South Wales ports and Southern Europe (especially Spain) taking coal out and bringing iron ore back. SS Cincora was an iron screw steamer, 688t, built Liverpool 1874, master Williams, owned Richards, Liverpool. He was aboard Cincora in Newport Docks for the 1881 census. His last marine service was 1887.
He twice had to get new documents after his were lost at sea:

1 May 1874, SS Linda abandoned in Atlantic, Liverpool to St
John, telegram from master to Liverpool owners: abandoned leaking,
sinking and on fire in mid ocean, crew saved. More details.

Certificate lost when deck house washed away aboard SS Cincora on 20 Feb 1880
while on a passage from Newport to Barcelona and Carthagena (coal out, iron ore
back). Position 47°N, 7°23'W -
which is about 100 miles WNW of Ushant. This is near the edge of the
continental shelf and is a notorious area for rough seas in the Bay of Biscay.
At a similar date and location, the outbound SS Chimborazo suffered damage
with 17 injured and 4 killed aboard.
Another marine accident was reported on 17 October 1881 when the
steamer Cincora of Liverpool arrived in Middlesborough with a cargo of
iron ore from Bilbao. She had sustained considerable damage in the severe
storm. Her decks having been swept and three of the crew drowned, while off
Bridlington. They are reported in the crew
agreement as cook: N Laudra from Trieste; boatswain: Henry Bosthwick from
Edinburgh; AB seaman: John Davies of Aberayron (age 22). The remaining 27 crew
(including David Michael as first mate, listed with a weekly wage of £8)
survived.
Fuller account of vessels sailed in.
Aged 42, he married Martha Williams who worked and lived nearby. She moved to Bristol, when pregnant, where their son David (Bert) was born.
After leaving the sea, he became a publican (Vulcan Hotel, Dock
St., Newport c1891-1899), then lived in Hafod, York Place, Newport (near
St. Woolos), next door to son David(Bert) and his wife.
He lost sight of one eye in keeping order in pub:
