death cert Mary M 4 Sep 1844 91 years Blaenpant, Lampeter, widow of a tucker witnessed (X) Jane Davies, d-in-law. [This could be supporting evidence that Michael Davies of Pottre, who married Jane, was Mary's son; another, more likely, possibility is that Thomas Williams was Mary Michael's son, father named William John David Michael, so his wife Jane was daughter in law. William Michael's son, Thomas, married his first cousin, Jane, whose father was David Michael 1746-1820, d. at Esgerwen Fawr, Llanarth. Thomas and Jane appear with the surname Williams in the 1841 Census for Lampeter parish, Blaenpant.]

David Michael (jr - father of Bert) is cousin of John Michael whose daughter Esther Michael married Daniel Edwards and their great-grandson is Huw Edwards (reads the BBC news).

Mary Michael
bp 17 Oct 1813 Llanarth f: John M, labourer of Singrig goch, m: Mary
Married 2 Sept 1837 Thomas Davies (Mary Jones 24, living Ystrad House, Mary's father described as John Michael weaver; both signed X; Parish church Llanfihangel Ystrad; witness James Davies, William Richards; TD 25, servant man, TD's father John David Jenkin, carpenter, living Glanywern [owned David Richard, also housing William Richard] - SE of St Michael's Church LFY)
Ch: John Davies b 1838 Llanarth (or Dihewyd), Mary Davies b 1839 LFY, Elizabeth Davies b 1841 LFY [LFY=Llanfihangel Ystrad]
Thomas (bp 27 Sep 1812 LNTH f: John David m: Elizabeth) died of fever 23 Nov 1841, buried 26 Nov 1841 aged 29 at LFY, address Talsarn [2 km east of Ystrad Aeron], Trefilan. Occupation (carpenter: crossed-out) labourer. John Davies (signed X) was present at the death[father presumably].
Mary Davies lived in Mydroilyn (Gilfachisa, near the woolen factory, NW of centre) at censuses 1851-1891. She died there 8 Nov 1897. She described herself as pauper (labourer's widow); hosier; baker. Her mother, Mary Michael, died at Scyborwen, nearby, in 1847 and MM's death was witnessed by Mary Davies - most probably her daughter.
Mary Davies's unmarried daughters Mary and Elisa were hosier and dressmaker. Her unmarried daughter Mary had a son (father John James of Newquay(?)) Evan Davies/James (b 1867) who lived with her at Gilfach-isa and became a teacher then baker.
Mary Davies's son, John Davies, was at school aged 13 and by age 23 was a mariner. Crew lists give at least 4 different "John Davies" born 1838-9 at New Quay (Llanarth born seaman were usually described as born New Quay). One of them is described as carpenter and seaman - maybe carpentry skills came from John Davies's grandfather. It does seem, however, that this John Davies remained a seaman and did not become an officer - unlike his cousins David Michael and John Michael.

Two John Davies were born about the same date (1838) in Llanarth and both became mariners.
The other John Davies was born to the family [f: John Davies, m: Elizabeth] at Llwynrheol farm [between Mydroilyn and Oakford] and became a master mariner and shipowner: he lived at Henfynyw and then built Manor House in Aberaeron in 1885. He married Mary Enoch who died in 1873 after their children Magdalen, John(d young), John Rees(b 1869) were born. He then married Margaret Jones and had further childen Mary Jane, James Thomas(b 1877), Osman, Elizabeth and Madeline. John Davies became owner of a vessel [barque Ella] and a respected master mariner, he died 6 Nov 1901.
Both of John Davies's sons John Rees Davies and James Thomas Davies went to sea: the former in 1883 aged 14 and was lost at sea on 8 Oct 1884; the latter made a first voyage in 1891 aged 14 on the Ella, owned by his father, became a master mariner and died, aged 30, of diphtheria (also reported as scarlet fever) while serving as mate on board the London-owned steamship River Plate returning from Buenos Aires on 24 July 1909.
