Nominations for the Epainos Prize awarded for the best paper by a young European regional scientist
The European Regional Science Association is proud to announce the second year of operation of the Epainos Prize. The aim of the Epainos Prize is to stimulate the presentation of high quality papers by young European scholars at the European Congresses of the Regional Science Association. The Epainos Prize will be awarded for the second time at the 37th European Congress in Rome in August 1997.
Candidates should not have reached the age of 33 on September 1, 1997. During 1997, they should also be working, or be registered as a student, at an institution in Europe (including Israel, Turkey and CIS). Papers nominated should, in principle, be single authored and must be accepted for, and presented at, the ERSA-Congress in Rome. The paper should meet the standards required for possible publication (after revision) in the Papers in Regional Science, otherwise the prize will not be awarded.
The winner will be announced during the Congress and will receive 600 ECU, plus a commemorative plaque and a certificate. A second prize will also be awarded comprising 300 ECU and a certificate. The winning paper will also be considered for publication in the Papers of Regional Science, following the normal review procedures.
ERSA, RSAI and the LOC of Rome have been kind enough to provide the funding to support the award of the Epainos Prize. Papers will be judged by a Reading Committee consisting of: Folke Snickars (EOC/Editor PRS, acting as Chairperson), Riccardo Cappellin (LOC, acting as Secretary) and Manfred Fisher (EOC). The decision of the Committee will be final.
Nominations for the Epainos Prize should be submitted in the form of
a letter from the nominee's supervisor, including a brief citation
(no more than 250 words) outlining the justification for the nomination,
together with a recent copy of the nominee's C.V. and five copies of the
paper (in English). Nominations must be sent to reach the following
before 1 May, 1997:

BACKGROUND AND ORGANISATION
Three years after the seminar held in Aberdeen (UK, Rural realities, trends and choices), this one will deepen the analysis on the changes affecting rural areas without focusing on agricultural issues.
In most European countries, farming is no longer the main provider of jobs, neither are farmers the dominant social groupe in the countryside. As a consequence, rural could no longer be roughly equated to agricultural. Henceforth, factors which are not connected with the fortune of the farm sector play a decisive role in the future of rural areas. One must rethink the way these rural territories are linked to urban centres, and more generally to the whole economy, within a context of globalization of economic exchanges and relationships, and of revolution of communication techniques. Many researchers have been recently undertaken studies on the changes affecting rural (or little urbanized) territories set in different economic and social contexts.
The first objective of the seminar is to bring together academics from different disciplines (economics, sociology, geography, demography, regional studies, regional science) and sub-disciplines (spatial economics, industrial economics, political economy, agriculture economics) who have recently worked or are currently working on that issue.
The second is to precise the different theoretical frameworks used to assess the extent to which they are complementary or contradictory. In order to achieve these objectives, the contributions should make explicit the theoretical background of the empirical works.
TOPICS
The main issues which will be addressed at the
seminar will include the following:
. demographic dynamics;
. urban to rural (and rural to urban) occupational migrations and
career trajectories;
. urban to rural (and rural to urban) migrations, changes in
settlement patterns and peri-urbanization;
. labour market geographical segmentation;
. localization of populations and activities;
. economic and social functions of rural areas;
. local productive systems within little urbanized territories;
. interactions between actors and institutions within
little urbanized territories;
. rural policies and methodologies of their evaluation;
. conceptualizing rurality.
ORGANIZATION
The seminar is organized by the department of Rural Economics and Sociology of INRA (National Agricul- tural Research Institute) with the contribution of the ENESAD (Agricultural Higher Education National Establishment of Dijon). It will be held on 20-21 March 1997 in Dijon (France).

Scope of the Meeting
Recent developments in the handling of digital geographic information have created many new opportunities for socio-economic research. Geography, and Urban and Regional Planning have been among the first fields of application but many others have now started to take advantage of these opportunities including Sociology, Criminology, Public Health, Archeology, and Business Management to mention but a few. The main objective of this Euroconference is to promote interdisciplinary discussion and evaluation of the positive and negative impacts that the growing use of geographic information handling technologies have on society and social science research.
Themes of the Meeting
The programme of this conference is organised around three themes with contributions from leading social scientists from Europe and the United States: the nature of the recent technological developments in the handling of geographic information such as GIS, large scale databases, and multimedia; current efforts to establish a geographic information resource base at the European level, including key issues such as data pricing and ownership which need addressing before geographic information can be made truly European; the positive and negative impacts of these developments on society including the increased opportunities for the delivery of social services, impacts on personal privacy, and ethical issues. A poster session will also be organised.
