Training

Mr Phillip Brown is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry. He graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the University of Liverpool in 2007 and subsequently completed Vocational Training in 2008. He has undertaken further postgraduate study in both clinical practice and education, completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology at the University of Central Lancashire in 2014 and a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching and Learning at Edge Hill University in 2017. Reflecting his ongoing interest in dental education and academic practice, he completed a Master of Arts in Academic Practice at the University of Liverpool in 2023.

Current Roles

Internal

Phill joined the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry as a full-time Clinical Lecturer in 2018. His role combines undergraduate clinical teaching with academic leadership, curriculum development, quality assurance and governance. He teaches undergraduate Dental and Dental Therapy students across the School of Dentistry’s clinical facilities and within NHS General Dental Service and Community Dental Service outreach placements across Cheshire and Merseyside. Since 2018, Phill has been the Academic Lead for Outreach, with responsibility for the development and delivery of the School’s outreach compnent and the allocation of students in Years 3, 4 and 5 to external clinical placements. His role includes oversight of the educational quality, governance and financial arrangements associated with external placements, working closely with NHS providers and clinical supervisors across the region. Alongside his teaching and outreach responsibilities, Phill is a member of the Faculty Academic Quality and Standards Committee (FAQSC) and serves as a panel member for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences Health and Conduct Panel. He is also appointed as an Academic Misconduct Investigating Officer, supporting the University’s Student Conduct, Complaints and Compliance processes through the investigation and reporting of cases relating to suspected academic misconduct.

External

Phill became a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry in 2022. He has been an elected member of Wirral Local Dental Committee since 2013 and serves as Honorary Secretary, representing the interests and views of NHS primary care dental practitioners at local and national level. In 2024, Phill was appointed by the General Dental Council as an examiner for the Overseas Registration Examination (ORE), which assesses dentists who qualified outside the UK before they can register to practise dentistry in the UK. In 2025, Phill was appointed as an External Examiner at Newcastle University School of Dental Sciences, with responsibility for the Key Clinical Skills examinations for first-year BSc Dental Therapy and second-year BDS Dental students.

Previous Roles

Phill began his career in 2007 as a General Dental Practitioner and spent approximately 10 years working in NHS primary care as an associate/performer and subsequently as a practice owner/provider before moving into full-time academia. Within the University of Liverpool, he has previously served as 5th BDS Year Lead, with responsibility for academic leadership, student experience and coordination across the final year of the BDS programme. He has also served as a member of University Senate, contributing to the University’s academic governance and institutional decision-making.
