Teaching

On the diagnostic radiography course, I am module lead on two first year anatomy modules.

I am also involved in teaching on other modules including forensic radiography, practical sessions, simulation, research, as well as the schools interprofessional sessions.

Anatomy & Pathophysiology & Image Interpretation

I teach both of the first year anatomy modules on the BSc (HONS). These modules cover the appendicular and axial skeleton, cardiovascular, respiratory, GI, urinary and reproductive systems. I use a variety of teaching methods to ensure that learners of all styles are able to gain a deep understanding of the anatomy and pathophysiology, which is a fundamental base for all modalities which diagnostic radiographers may be involved in. I was an advanced practitioner for many years before moving to academia and would report musculoskeletal images rather than them being given to the radiologists. I am able to use these skills when teaching anatomy by linking the body area under study with images seen in clinical, to reinforce the theory taught at university and real world practical applications.

Research and research methods

I am passionate about increasing the research profile of radiography as a profession and feel the best way to do this includes sparking a passion for it at the earliest stage. Research is embedded in our courses from the first year of study and many of our students have published their work, either in journals or presenting at international conferences such as the UK Imaging and Oncology conference (UKIO).

Forensic and Postmortem Radiography

Forensic Radiography is any application of radiography that may be used in a court of law, including assault, murder, identification and mass fatalities, amongst others. My area of interest is in identifying suspected physical abuse and victim identification and have been involved in different murder, and potential murder, cases. I am also interested in the humanistic side, such as bereavement, the collecting and returning of personal effects, and the impact that religion and spirituality have on the deceased and bereaved they leave behind.
