Research Interest 1
My research interests fall under the general area of applied marine ecology. Recent work has focused on investigating the mechanistic links between fisheries disturbance, variability in secondary production of the system and species diversity. I am interested in how the changing distributions of size within marine communities has implications for biodiversity of the overall ecosystem. This is particularly relevant in assessing the ecological significance of changes thought to have occured as a result of manageable human activities such as fishing. More recently I have become involved in research collaborating with engineers to model the interaction between physical disturbances and the seafloor, with the aim of developing predictive models of the ecological consequences of this. I am also interested in the design of marine protected areas and how an increased understanding of the factors that influence the distribution and size of populations of invertebrate and fish species will help to inform this.
