Professional Activities

My external engagement activities range from evaluating grant proposals for UK and non-UK funding agencies, and peer reviewing manuscripts, to giving presentations in schools and museums, and collaborating with popular science journalists.

Industrial melanism in the peppered moth has been used very widely in schools as an example of micro-evolutionary change, with the result that a large segment of society is somewhat familiar with the main features of the story. The material so-far presented in textbooks has however lacked any details of the underlying genetics. Our ongoing discoveries on these aspects go some way to filling this knowledge gap, providing a further layer of evidence for how novel adaptations may arise and spread through mutation and natural selection.
