Sepsis and other critical illnesses, pathophysiology, diagnosis, monitoring and therapy
My current interest is mainly in the physiopathology of sepsis to understand molecular mechanisms and develop diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tools. In addition, I am also interested in the acute phase response, the transition from infection/inflammation to carcinogenesis and arthrosclerosis. The genetic matching between host and pathogen in septic shock is also within our research scope. Currently, the innate immunity to DAMPs and their roles in sepsis development from localised infection as well as the mechanisms of immunosuppression in critical illnesses become new focuses.
Our laboratory employs basic research tools, including particularly molecular and cellular biology, protein biochemistry flow cytometry, confocal imaging of cells and calcium signals, cardiomyocyte contractions etc, mass spectrometry, including proteomics and phosphoproteomics; animal models, including sepsis, pancreatitis, and trauma mouse or rat models; and clinical studies, including patients enrolled in different Intensive Care Units.
