About

I trained as a clinical psychologist and subsequently, as a psychodynamic psychotherapist, in the North West. Post-qualification, I worked in the NHS from 1986 - 2014 in a number of services and specialisms (adult mental health, drug misuse, HIV/ AIDS, sexual health, physical health).
In 2008 I joined the academic team of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) at Liverpool as a part-time Senior University Clinical Teacher. My academic post was alongside my clinical post as a consultant clinical psychologist/ professional lead of a clinical health psychology service in an acute NHS trust in Greater Manchester. From 2015, I worked full-time on the DClinPsy as the programme's academic director and admissions tutor, leading the academic team and contributing to teaching and learning in areas of clinical expertise across all three years. I also provided one clinical session in the University’s Student Health/ Brownlow GP Service. I reduced to working 0.5fte in October 2022.
My research interests include qualitative methods (particularly IPA) to explore post-traumatic growth in a number of different populations and contexts, the experience of physical health problems, and training and development in healthcare professionals. I have supervised and examined (viva voce) DClinPsy and PhD (IPHS/ IPH) research over many years.
I am a steering group member of, and trained facilitator for, the interdisciplinary University of Liverpool Schwartz Rounds project (funded by HEE-NW/ HEE North) - see https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/population-health/research/groups/schwartz/
which has been nominated for (and awarded) a number of local and national awards.
