Research
Policing, police and democracy
I am interested in the role and significance of policing and the police in democratic societies. My current research in this area involves ethnographic observations of police discretion in action.
Public understanding of, and opinions about, criminal justice
I am interested in how members of the public understand key aspects of criminal justice, and the ways in which their opinions are elicited in order to ensure that they have confidence in the way the system operates.
The public role of social science, especially debates about 'public criminology'
I am interested in exploring the role of social scientific endeavours within democratic societies by critically examining the ways in which researchers engage with and critique policy and practice.
