The different streams of my research all relate to the management of supply chain relationship and covers (most recent first):
- The management of transparency in supply chains in response to modern slavery and human rights due diligence (HRDD) legislation
- Delivery of social value in response to UK legislation
- Theory and practice of value creation, transformation and distribution in supply chain relationships
- Management of dysfunctional relationships
- Maintain power equilibrium in strategic relationships
My research draws on a variety of qualitative techniquest to generate insights into the real-world issues that often inhibit policy intentions at government, sector and firm levels.
Modern Slavery in Supply Chains
I (and my colleagues) have undertaken an extensive programme of research since 2018, on Modern Slavery in Supply chains. This programme encompassed five major research projects, supplemented by two PhD research projects. I have been the project leader (primary investigator) on most of these projects. Our team's research includes detailed analyses of secondary sources, such as published modern slavery statements, as well as primary research interacting with managers from multiple relevant business functions. Research has focused on the construction sector because of issues highlighted with this sector, but also because the complex and dynamic nature of the sector and the diversity of its labour relationships. In addition to research conducted in the UK, I have developed good working relationship with several universities in Australia to share research insights and to collaborate on public consultations such as the recently completed Australian MSA review.
Inter-organisational collaboration
Following on from my industrial career (outsourcing and supplier governance consultancy), I maintain an interest in the human and social facets of inter-organisational relationships, ranging from major strategic partnerships through to episodic SME collaborations. Conceptual interests include: collaboration; the marketing concept of Value; Power; Social Capital, and Social Value.
