About
Barry Gibbs is Honorary Professor within the Acoustics Research Unit. His research on structure-borne sound focusses on the prediction and control of noise and vibration in buildings and other structures. He has held over twenty major research grants and his most recent research in vibro-acoustics was funded by Boeing and also was in collaboration with groups in Germany, France and the U.K. His research stems from his role as UK representative on European Standards Committees, also as advisor on the development of test protocols in the aerospace and building services industries. He is the author or co-author of over ninety journal papers and over one hundred and seventy conference papers and was founding co-editor of the quarterly international journal Building Acoustics. He has been Keynote Speaker at conferences in the USA, Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore, as well as the U.K. He has supervised over 20 PhD students and externally examined over 60 PhD Degrees at universities in: Berlin, Cambridge, Hong Kong, Leuven, Eindhoven, Australia, New Zealand, Lulea and Chalmers (Sweden), Santa Catarina (Brazil) and other universities in the U.K. He has acted as consultant in room acoustics, environmental noise and noise control engineering. He is Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics, Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration. He was elected President of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration for the period 2002-2004, during which congresses took place in Florida, Stockholm and St. Petersburg. In 2015, he was awarded the R W B Stephens Medal by the Institute of Acoustics for outstanding contributions to acoustics research and education. In 2020 he became Distinguished International Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering of the USA. He was President of the Institute of Acoustics (membership approximately 3000) in 2018-20 and Immediate Past President until 2022. He was Congress President of Inter-noise 2022 in Glasgow. which attracted 1250 participants, 1000 of which attended in person, with 800 papers presented.
