Professional Activities

In the last 10 years, Rahman has worked with the World Health Organization is several capacities. He is a long standing member (since 2015) of the mental health and substance abuse Guidelines Development Group for the mental health gap action Intervention Guide. He assisted in the development of Guidelines for Maternal and Newborn Care, leading to the inclusion of mental health care as an essential component of postnatal care. He has served as an advisor to the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) on maternal and child mental health policy, and on the EMRO Technical Advisory Committee for mental health response to COVID19.

Rahman has served on several policy-advisory expert panels, including: the National Institute of Mental Health, Washington (Integrating Mental Health Care into Health Systems - 2021); World Economic Forum (Global Agenda Council on Mental Health – 2015-16); Institute of Medicine, Washington (Investing in young children globally – 2013); the New York Academy of Sciences (Integrating nutrition, health, and psychosocial interventions – 2013).

Rahman is engaged professionally with NHS providers. With Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust, he provides evidence-based clinical practice including interventions based on his own my own research. He builds capacity and capability of specialist child psychiatry trainees and mental health practitioners in child mental health research. He is a co-founder of the International Child Health Department that promotes bilateral learning at Alder Hey. He has been awarded 5 Local Excellence Awards by Alder Hey for my services.
With Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, he provides mentorship to clinical researchers. He has contributed to developing the R&D strategy of the Trust and chairs a joint meeting between the University and the Trust's Research Directorates.
