Expertise
The University has long-standing expertise in the area of
bioethics applied to healthcare and was one of the first
to offer taught Masters courses in healthcare ethics. Our
bioethics specialists lead teaching and research in this
area across all faculties.
Bioethics touches on many different issues; we conduct
inter- and multidisciplinary research at the interface
between social science and bioethics, alongside research
into the philosophical issues raised by the practice of
medicine and developments in biotechnology. We have
significant experience in developing empirical methods in
bioethics and in conducting multidisciplinary projects to
address complex ethical and social problems.
Our research team has particular interests in reproductive
ethics, the ethics of emergent technologies, empirical
ethics, public policy and regulation, organisational ethics
and the ethical dimensions of clinical research.
Our research findings have been used by policy-
makers and professional bodies to formulate
guidelines and policies such as European Guidance
on HIV Testing and the American Society of Repro-
ductive Medicine guidelines on gamete donation.
We are involved with the following organisations:
--
Bioethics Beyond Borders
--
Donor Sibling Registry
--
British Association of Social Workers Project
Group on Assisted Reproduction
--
The Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust
Ethics Committee.
We have also produced reports for pharmaceutical
companies on the ethical aspects of marketing and
contribute to policy developments and discussions in
areas such as disclosure to donor offspring – Nuffield
Council of Bioethics and the HFEA.
