Manuel Irujo Scholarship in Basque Studies
Applications are invited for one Manuel Irujo Scholarship in Basque Studies, to begin in September 2024.
The Scholarship provides approximately £4,700. The sum covers full fees at the Home student rate for the one-year MRes Modern Languages and Cultures (Basque Studies pathway), and can also be awarded to students studying MA Translation or MA Film Studies (with a focus on a Basque topic).
Subject areas
We await proposals related to the cultural production, the cultural history or the politics of the Basque Country. In particular, we encourage projects on the areas of memory studies, exile/diaspora studies, and European /cosmopolitan studies, all of which remind us of the biography and lifeworld of Manuel Irujo.
Other possible focuses for study include: memory and representation; migration and diaspora; transnational, postnational and postcolonial studies; popular culture; film and visual culture; literary studies; digital culture; gender and sexuality.
We also welcome comparative or relational projects that create links between aspects of Basque society and culture and their manifestation in other cultural, national and/or linguistic areas.
Application and selection process
The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence. Applicants are required to make contact with Dr Gorka Mercero Altzugarai for assistance in formulating a research proposal, and should include a completed Expression of Interest form (MIS).
Completed expressions of interest should reach the department by 31 July 2024.
