N8 CIR 2025 RSE Internship - Undergraduate internship programme
The N8 CIR 2025 internship programme focuses on exposing undergraduates to future career paths in research software engineering (RSE) - the professional development of research software. The programme offers up to 3 internship places at Liverpool, and at each of the 8 computationally intensive research N8 universities.
Develop skills in machine learning, digital health, or digital humanities
- Enhance technical and topic-specific skills through practical development work
- Gain first-hand experience of research teamwork and the software development process
- Work alongside leading researchers and software professionals
- Contribute to important research with real world impact.
Work will be supervised by a research leader, with an RSE mentor providing comprehensive support. Interns will also gain though engagement and networking with fellow interns across the N8 universities.
Project proposal, internship application, and work details
Principal investigators (PIs) are encouraged to propose potential research work in the above research areas before 28 April. While unnecessary, candidates may work with PIs to develop project ideas.
Internship applications must arrive before 2 May. The intern application form gives further details on the selection process and some timescale requirements. Successful candidates will be selected around 14 May, with internship work starting from 18 June.
Interns will usually work full-time at Liverpool for 8 weeks, receiving wages near the national living wage, pro-rata; however, some flexibility exists for shorter, or part-time, positions for excellent candidates, or to accommodate those with time restrictions, eg childcare. Final work will be presented in-person at the N8 CIR RSE project showcase, in York on 12 September 2025. Financial support will be provided for travel and accommodation, as necessary. The N8 CIR internship page holds further details on the programme.
