Philosophy MA student, Vika Bavykina, curates Ukrainian Pavilion at Venice Biennale

Katherine Furman gave a keynote ‘In Defence of Street Corner Epistemology’ at the Co-creating knowledges Workshop at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This month she was also in South Carolina to speak about ‘Toward and Affective Theory of Distrust in Science’ at the Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice conference in Columbia.

Michael Hauskeller spent four days in Portugal (13 to 16 May) to attend a PhD viva at the University of Minho in Braga as an external examiner and to give a talk on his latest book Sisyphus Fulfilled. A Subjectivist Approach to Meaning in Life at the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society. The book will be published later this year by Palgrave Macmillan.

Vid Simoniti gave a keynote lecture on “Art and Polarisation”, at the LUCA Art Academy Ghent, KU Leuwen. 

 

Publications

Michael Hauskeller has signed a contract with Routledge for a new book entitled Philosophical Dialogues on the Meaningfulness of Life for their book series Philosophical Dialogues on Contemporary Problems.

 

Other News

Former BA and MA student, Anna Woodruff, is now a teacher at Gateachre School, Liverpool. She brought students from her brilliant Philosophy Club to the department to learn about Panpsychism and Aphantasia from Laura Gow and (current MA student) Georgie Brighouse.

The biggest ever PGR conference took place 22-23 May, organised by Lauren Stephens. Nine PhD students presented papers over two days. Congratulations to all.

Rachael Wiseman spoke about ‘Metaphysical Animals’ at the Macclesfield Literary and Philosophical Society 

Michael Hauskeller gave a keynote speech on “why not eat the dead” at the Relating to Death, Relating to the Dead conference that took place at the University of Edinburgh on May 2-3. The conference, at which our current PhD student Michalina Bevoor also gave a talk, was organised by Michael Cholbi and our former MA student Ellie Palmer, who is now doing her PhD at Edinburgh (way to go, Ellie!).

Michael also gave an invited talk on “dying as process and experience” at the Sowerby Workshop What Is Dying?, which took place at King’s College London on 8th of May.

Vid Simoniti gave book presentations, on his recently published Artists Remake the World, at the University of Lancaster, Institute of Contemporary Arts and University of Cambridge, History of Art department, Modern and Contemporary Seminar.
