Net carbon zero for all work-related travel
Scientists emit much more carbon from work-related travel than the general population, and it seems impossible to achieve the University’s net zero carbon target without tackling this issue. We will offset all work-related travel emissions from the entire Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences within one year by: (1) Reducing carbon use (e.g. stimulate active travel, avoid unnecessary flights) (2) Offsetting the remaining carbon by carbon sequestering. We will explore local initiatives including wetland development and rewilding. We will favour projects that provide added benefits in the form of equality & diversity opportunities and outreach/ education. By doing so, a maximum of UN Sustainable Development Goals and University targets will be met. To achieve this, a graduate will be employed to run workshops, collect data and implement the field component. The project will achieve its aims of 100% carbon offset because there is a costed, commercial backup plan.
