Professor Tim Maughan is Professor of Oncology at the University of Liverpool and Professor Emeritus at the University of Oxford. He continues clinical practice in Gastrointestinal cancers in the Oxford region.

Tim is known for his research in colorectal cancer, mainly as a clinical trial leader. He led four UK national MRC studies (CRO6, COIN, FOCUS3 and FOCUS4) and has published extensive papers both reporting the clinical findings and translational research studies from these trials. He also led the MRC stratified medicine consortium in colorectal cancer (S:CORT) including 7 UK universities in collaborative research. This has generated a rich dataset of 2000 colorectal cancer patients including anonymised clinical data, genomic transcriptomic and methylation data all linked to digitised image of the H&E slide.

Previously Tim worked in Cardiff as an NHS oncologist where he set up the Wales Cancer Trials Network and subsequently led the development of the clinical research infrastructure across the NHS in Wales. From 2011-2021, Tim was Clinical Director of the MRC/CRUK Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology. Tim has previously chaired the Clinical Research Committee for Cancer Research UK and the Strategy Advisory Group for NCRI.
