Teaching

Malham tarn, where we often go to study nesting birds and mating insects

Field skills for biologists

I teach on the first year field course, usually in the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales, and occasionally on the second (France) and third year (Uganda) field courses. Most of my field teaching is about experimental design, behavioural ecology, and observing animal behaviour in nature.

Animal behaviour and evolution

I teach on animal behaviour courses, particularly focusing on the evolution of cooperation and conflict. I run a Masters course on Evolution and Behaviour.

Lab projects

I take a lot of Honours and Masters students into my research group, typically studying aspects of fruit fly behaviour and evolution. Many of my students have produced such high quality work that we have been able to publish it, and I'm very proud of these students. Here are some of the papers I've published with my undergraduates and Masters students: Fisher, A. M., Le Page, S., Manser, A., Lewis, D. R., Holwell, G. I., Wigby, S., & Price, T. A. (2021). Relatedness modulates density‐dependent cannibalism rates in Drosophila. Functional Ecology, 35(12), 2707-2716. Walsh, B. S., Mannion, N. L., Price, T. A., & Parratt, S. R. (2021). Sex-specific sterility caused by extreme temperatures is likely to create cryptic changes to the operational sex ratio in Drosophila virilis. Current Zoology, 67(3), 341-343. Verspoor, R. L., Smith, J. M., Mannion, N. L., Hurst, G. D., & Price, T. A. (2018). Strong hybrid male incompatibilities impede the spread of a selfish chromosome between populations of a fly. Evolution letters, 2(3), 169-179. Giraldo‐Perez, P., Herrera, P., Campbell, A., Taylor, M. L., Skeats, A., Aggio, R., ... & Price, T. A. R. (2016). Winter is coming: hibernation reverses the outcome of sperm competition in a fly. Journal of evolutionary biology, 29(2), 371-379. Verspoor, R. L., Cuss, M., & Price, T. A. R. (2015). Age-based mate choice in the monandrous fruit fly Drosophila subobscura. Animal Behaviour, 102, 199-207. Maguire, Chris , Anne Lizé, and Tom Price. "Assessment of rival males through the use of multiple sensory cues in the fruitfly Drosophila pseudoobscura." PloS one 10.4 (2015): e0123058. Fisher, D. N., Doff, R. J., & Price, T. A. (2013). True polyandry and pseudopolyandry: why does a monandrous fly remate?. BMC evolutionary biology, 13(1), 157.
