Research Interest 1

Steve's research investigates the environmental impact and performance of buildings in the context of climate change and low carbon, sustainable design. He has worked across a broad range of subject areas, including energy, thermal comfort, ventilation, daylight, noise, climate change and sustainable design. Steve has held over 20 EPSRC awards and has been the principal or co-investigator for several major multidisciplinary research consortia developed through EPSRC managed programmes, including VivaCity2020, a study of urban sustainability (£2.91 million); URSULA, a study of urban rivers and sustainability (£2.5 million), SCORCHIO, a study of the impact of climate change on the urban built environment (£500,000) and COPSE, a study of probabilistic climate change weather data for the built environment (£729,000). Steve has held three awards from EPSRC’s Sustainable Cities programmes, together with other funding from BRE, ETSU, DTI and industry. He has also been awarded two Knowledge Transfer Partnership grants.
Steve has supervised over 30 PhD/MPhil students from the UK and overseas and current/recent projects have involved studies in Bahrain, China, Egypt, Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Thailand.
Steve is currently interested in receiving applications for PhD or MPhil studies in the following areas• sustainable urban environments• sustainable building design• adapting urban areas to climate change• climate-sensitive building design• thermal comfort in hot climates• air flow in and around buildings• daylight in buildings• eco-refurbishment of existing buildings• interactions between natural ventilation and urban noise
