Research

Literature and Theology

My work explores intersections of literature and theology from the Romantic period to the contemporary. I am interested both in the ways in which literature mediates theological concepts and in theological approaches to language, symbol and narrative. Much of my work in this field has focused on Gothic literature: I am particularly interested in the relationship between theology and spectrality, and in Gothic's engagement with theological concepts of evil.

Nineteenth-Century Literature

I have written extensively on the work of the Brontes, and also have interests in sensation fiction, Victorian Gothic and the fin-de-siecle. I am particularly interested in the artistic and philosophical legacies of Romanticism in Victorian literature.
