About

Rajarshi (Rishi) is a surgeon scientist with the Liverpool Pancreatitis Research Group and is also a Consultant Major Trauma and Emergency General Surgeon at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His research is focused on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms that lead to acute pancreatitis, particularly mitochondrial injury, and developing novel prognostic tests and treatments for the disease. He completed his medical training from a number of world-renowned institutions; Trinity College, Cambridge University, UK (First Class, Double Distinction), Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA (Honours in Trauma, Critical Care and general Surgery) and WHO, Geneva. He went on to complete his specialist surgical training at three of the highest volume centres in the UK; Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, Liverpool University Hospitals and St. James's Hospital, Leeds. In parallel to his clinical training, he completed integrated clinical academic research training as a National Institute of Health Research Academic Clinical Fellow, the Amelie Waring Doctoral Fellow (Guts UK) and NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer. He was twice awarded the Lord Rodney Smith Medal of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland for translational research alongside American Pancreatic Association, International Association of Pancreatology and International Union of Physiological Sciences Young Investigator Awards and the Royal Society of Medicine Basic Science in Surgery (MIA) prize. Most recently he has been awarded the Hunterian Professorship, 2024, from the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his ongoing research into new tests and treatments for acute pancreatitis with the Liverpool Pancreatitis Research Group.
