Teaching

Sociological Theory

Much of my teaching engages with contemporary and 'classical' sociological theory. In particular, I co-ordinate a second year module that is based around a comprehensive introduction to major shifts in sociology - such as implied by analysis of major perspectives; the 'cultural turn'; and social studies of knowledge production. I also make contributions both to a first year core module and a MA module on Philosophy of Social Science.

Urban Sociology

I co-ordinate two optional modules in this general area: the first is a module on classical and contemporary urban sociologies, the second is a module on the 'sociology of architecture'. In my teaching - and research - I am particularly interested in the material, urban forms of social division.

Visual Sociology

I run a short course on visual analysis that is available to MA students and PhD researchers. The aim of this course is to draw out some distinctively 'sociological' lines of inquiry with respect to visual data. This short course reflects an ongoing interest of mine with respect to the production and consumption of images of cities. I also make a significant contribution to a second year module - co-ordinated by my colleague Kirsteen Paton - called 'Visualising the City'.
