Nicholas joined the University of Liverpool as a postdoctoral research associate in September 2024 working alongside Professor Karl Bates and Dr Graham Askew (U. Leeds) to investigate mastication in rabbits. Prior to this, Nicholas undertook postdoctoral roles at the University of Southern Denmark (Odense, DK), where he investigated the biomechanics and underlying physiology of birdsong alongside Professor Coen Elemans, and the Royal Veterinary College (London, UK), where he investigated the muscle-mechanical compromise framework alongside Professor Jim Usherwood and Dr Tim West. Before undertaking postdoctoral roles, Nicholas worked as a research assistant at the University of Surrey (Guildford, UK), where he worked with Dr Constanza Gomez Alvarez and industrial partners to investigate lameness in domestic dogs.

Nicholas completed his PhD at the University of Leeds, where he worked with Dr Graham Askew to investigate the mechanics and energetics of jet propulsion swimming in cuttlefish. Prior to this, Nicholas undertook an MRes in Animal Behaviour at the University of Nottingham, and a BSc (Hons) in Aquatic Zoology at the University of Hull.
