Research

Neutrino Physics

I am interested in all aspects of neutrino physics. From my early research on solving the solar neutrino problem in SNO I have been interested in solving the big questions in neutrino physics. The search for CP violation in the neutrino sector is one of the major goals in the sector. Building on our research in T2k which discovered electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam we will extend the search in a next generation experiment so that we can potentially discover CP violation. I am leading Liverpool into the Hyper Kamiokande program which is a direct upgrade of T2K. Within Hyper-K I lead the calibration working group leading the development of calibration infrastructure and software. In Liverpool we lead the development of the Hyper-K light injection system with particular responsibility for the light sources and fibre optics. In addition to these activities in Japan, the Watchman experiment due to be constructed at the Boulby mine near Whitby develops the same neutrino detection techniques to the monitoring of nuclear reactors for non proliferation goals.
