Mate Subašić joined the University of Liverpool in 2024. His research agenda includes two streams: transnational ethnic ties and environmental movements, each focused on the East and South East Europe. Before joining the University of Liverpool, Mate was a Lecturer in Russian Politics and International Relations at Manchester Metropolitan University and a Research Assistant at King's College London. He has published in world-leading academic journals, including the Democratization journal, Nationalities papers, and the Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space, and has contributed to edited volumes, working papers, and blogs.
Mate is a co-director of Europe and the World Centre (EWC) at the University of Liverpool, where he develops and maintains international research networks by organising conferences, workshops, training, and related publication outputs. Mate is a co-convenor of the British International Studies Association (BISA) South East Europe Working Group and a Balkan Section Committee member at the Association for Studies of Nationalities (ASN). He is also a member of the Political Studies Association (PSA), the Association for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) and the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES).
