About

I was appointed Lecturer in Politics in 2006 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2010. I obtained my first degree from the University of Warwick in 1996 and my PhD from the University of Southampton in 2002 where I was awarded a Thorneycroft scholarship.

My research interests are in the field of British politics, contemporary political history and political ideologies. I have published extensively in these fields including (as author or editor) 15 books as well as many journal articles and book chapters. My monograph on the political thought of the Conservative Right won the prize for best publication by the Political Studies Association's Conservatism Studies group in 2020. I have presented at, and convened, major conferences nationally and internationally. In recognition of my academic contribution I was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society. I am very keen to hear from potential PhD applicants who wish to research in my areas of specialism and have a successful track record of supervising PhD students to completion as well as being an external and internal examiner of doctoral candidates.

I teach modules related to my research interests. In addition, I also convene the Parliamentary Placement Scheme and the Local Placement Scheme. I have been an external examiner on undergraduate degree programmes and external assessor for new degree validations. I have been awarded Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

I was elected to the Executive of the Political Studies Association and (twice) to the Executive of the British Politics Group of the American Political Science Association.
