About

I joined the University of Liverpool as JW Hughes Professor of Engineering and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and Industrial Design in 2022, having previously been Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation & Engagement) at the University of Bradford (2017 - 2022), and Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Birmingham (2005 - 2017).

The early part of my career was spent in industry, working on the design and construction of water and wastewater treatment works, before a planned move to academia in 2005.

The focus of my research is on experimental and numerical approaches to address the global challenges which we face in managing water security and resource efficiency. Current areas of interest include the numerical modelling of various water and wastewater treatment processes using computational fluid dynamics and lattice Boltzmann modelling, and the development of novel optical water quality assessment tools. I have secured research funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the European Union (FP7 and H2020), as well as fully funded industrial research contracts from a range of charities and industrial organisations. I lead the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Net Zero Maritime Energy Solutions (N0MES).

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and a Chartered Scientist, and am a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and the International Water Association.
