Research
Zoonoses and One Health
The research in our team consists of a combination of field based epidemiology activities involving animals and humans, laboratory bench work particularly in pathogen diagnostics, pathogen typing and pathogen genetics studies, and data driven epidemiological analyses of large datasets. We study a range of epidemiological issues revolving around domestic livestock, peri-domestic wildlife and humans, in particular the epidemiology of zoonotic and emerging/re-emerging diseases. We have significant research projects on-going on co-infections with zoonoses, on elucidating the epidemiology and societal impacts of specific zoonotic pathogens, on pathogen transmission along livestock value chains, as well as activities on pathogen discovery in various reservoir species. We are involved in studies to both develop and apply tools for measuring the burden of infectious diseases in humans. We work with a range of local and international partners, and are involved in research projects based in Africa, Asia and Europe at present. Our team's sources of funding has included the Wellcome Trust, the UK Medical Resarch Council, UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and UK Department for International Development.
