About

Emily joined the department in 2016. She previously gained her PhD (funded by the Economic and Social Research Council) in 2013. Her research interests centre on the relationship between gender, media and politics and the extent to which these have changed over time. Emily is the author of Women, Media and Elections: Marginalisation and Representation in British Politics (2021) and co-editor of Online Othering: Exploring digital violence and discrimination on the web (2019). Emily is the Co-Director of DigiPol: Centre for Digital Politics, Media and Democracy.

Emily is the Principal Investigator of the British Academy funded project 'Online Abuse and Discrimination in British Politics: Women's experiences and mitigation strategies'. She has published extensively about legacy and online news media coverage of UK elections and the online othering and harassment of women in public life.

Outside of the university, Emily co-convened the UK Political Studies Association’s Media and Politics Specialist Group from 2013-2023 and served as the Assistant Editor for the European Journal of Communication from 2015-2022.
