About
David Brown joined the University of Liverpool in September 2024 as Lecturer in World Cinema. Prior to joining Liverpool, David held positions at the University of Exeter, City, University of London, King’s College London, and the University of Kent.
David’s research examines the rich and varied ways in which screen narratives engage viewers cognitively, emotionally, and aesthetically. Put simply, how do the stories told by film and television make people think and feel?
David has research published in leading journals such as Screen and NECSUS. His recent work explores how television might be particularly good at evoking specific emotions (such as dread); what to make of the preponderance of ‘plot twists’ in contemporary documentaries; and the role of music and sound in contemporary television serials. David is currently developing a monograph on facial expression and emotion in narrative cinema and how the representation and recognition of facial expression is shaped by culture. His work is highly interdisciplinary, drawing upon disciplines and approaches beyond film studies, especially philosophy and psychology.
David has extensive teaching experience that spans film, television, video games and music. He is an Associate Fellow of Advance HE.
