About

My clinical work and research focusses on respiratory tract infections.
For example pneumonia, bronchiectasis and mycobacterial lung diseases.
I focus on these diseases because they are common, severe and investment in the understanding and management of these conditions has been poor.

The research approach is comprehensive and starts with questions raised by patients.
We have interviewed patients to learn about their experiences of respiratory infections and their attitudes towards antibiotic use -Introduction - HAP interview - CAP interview 1 - CAP interview 2 - CAP interview 3 - CAP interview 4 - CAP interview 5 - Antibiotics interview 1 - Aintibiotics interview 2

Patients have told us the questions they think are important to research, in particular

"why did I get this infection ?"
"what caused my infection ?"
"how long will it take me to get better ?"

From these questions we are pursuing the following research programmes:-
1. Patient reported outcome measures to understand the dynamics of recovery
2. A comprehensive understanding of the aetiological agents involved in pneumonia so we can improve treatment
3. A better understanding of why patients develop pneumonia and of which patients do badly to inform prevention
4. Policy work to deveop a national approach to HAP. HAP Policy Project 1: Stakeholders - HAP Policy Project 2: Incidence and Mortality
