About
I joined University of Liverpool Management School in October 2016. My role within ULMS is Deputy Dean, Accreditation and Faculty; previously within ULMS I was Associate Dean, Research.
My research centres on work-family interfaces, which I explore from a socio-cultural perspective drawing on lenses of gender and the body. I explore how individuals manage their work, family and personal lives, focusing often on the experiences of parents, both mothers and fathers, Regarding mothers, I have developed the notions 'pregnant presenteeism' (where expectant mothers remain at work during pregnancy, even if they are ill) and 'maternal body work', where pregnant women and new mothers seek to fulfil the often conflicting criteria of 'good' mother and 'good' employee. Recently I have published research on middle and older age women and work.
Having been awarded a Leverhulme Fellowship to look at fatherhood and fathering (2018 - 2019), I also explore the relationships between paternity, health and employment.
With Rt Rev Dr Nigel Peyton I am undertaking a project examining the experiences of senior women clergy in the Church of England.
My research is published in leading management and sociology journals including: Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies; Academy of Management Perspectives; Human Relations; Organizational Research Methods, Social Science and Medicine, Journal of Business Ethics, British Journal of Management and International Journal of Management Reviews.
Since 2021, I have been General Editor for the Journal of Management Studies (Associate Editor 2019 - 2021) and previous to that (2013 - 2019) I held the the role of Editor in Chief, International Journal of Management Reviews.
I am past Chair of Northern Advanced Research Training Initiative (NARTI) which reflects my core interests in capacity building among PGR students and early career scholars. I am also Past Chair of the Research Committee, Chartered Associated of Business Schools (Chartered ABS). I am member of the Scientific Committee for the Chartered ABS Academic Journal Guide.
I am Fellow of the British Academy of Management; Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts
In 2020, I was awarded the British Academy of Management Research Medal
I am interested in supervising PhD students undertaking qualitative research in the areas of work and family.
