About
I qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Lisbon in Portugal in 2003. I then worked in a small animal practice for 1 year in Yorkshire, followed by a 1-year rotating internship in Newmarket. My next step was specialist training (residency) in veterinary neurology at the University of Glasgow between 2005 and 2008. After this training, I became a European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology and came to the University of Liverpool in 2009. I have remained here since that time and have been the Head of the Veterinary Neurology service of the Small Animal Teaching Hospital since 2012.
I was awarded the European College of Veterinary Neurology diploma in 2008 and also am an RCVS and European recognised specialist in veterinary neurology. I have become a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for my contributions to clinical practice in 2024, the same year that I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Clinical Interests
My main research interests are related to inflammatory disease affecting the nervous system in animals. I am mostly interested in the condition Meningoencephalomyelitis of Unknown Origin (MUO), a debilitating and often fatal immune-mediated disease affecting dogs that resembles multiple sclerosis and autoimmune encephalitis in humans
