Research Interests
Amandine Garde's research interests lie in the fields of EU Trade, Consumer, Advertising, Food and Public Health Law. She specialises more specifically on the role which regulation and litigation can play in improving public health and the wellbeing of children as a group of particularly vulnerable consumers.
In the last six years, she has developed an expertise on the legal aspects of obesity prevention and other risk factors for non-communicable diseases such as tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. Her book 'EU Law and Obesity Prevention' is the first to offer a critical analysis of the EU's Obesity Prevention Strategy.
As one of the few legal experts on the prevention of non-communicable diseases, Amandine has been invited to take part in a broad range of policy initiatives. Most notably, her work has attracted the attention of the World Health Organisation, for whom she has co-authored a major report on food marketing to children. She has also been involved in projects for the European Commission, and the Scottish Government. She regularly lends her advice to a range of public health and consumer organisations in the UK, mainland Europe and North America, and she has contributed to several training initiatives intended to help the public health community maximise the opportunities that the law offers for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
Amandine has recently won a grant from the Economic and Social Research Council to continue her work on food marketing to children. She is on research leave from December 2012 to December 2013.
