Bilal Ali (Class of 2022)

FY1 doctor Bilal shares the most rewarding (and fun!) parts of the foundation programme so far. "The feedback and response you get from patients and your colleagues goes a long way."

Linda de Cossart (Class of 1972)

Linda has enjoyed a trailblazing career as a vascular surgeon, including being elected as Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2008. "The important thing is to enjoy what you do and appreciate the opportunities that being a doctor gives you."

Ilyas Khattak (Class of 1999)

Ilyas is a consultant onco-plastic breast surgeon. "Being a Liverpool medic carries a strong sense of belonging and pride. The School has a diverse and active society, one that I am proud to represent today wherever I may be."

Kate Lightly (Class of 2006)

Kate has turned her passion of global maternal health into her day job and is now part of the University's Sanyu Research Unit. "Birth is a pivotal moment in life for women, their children and their families everywhere."

Dan Perry (Class of 2003)

Dan is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon and the first orthopaedic surgeon and UoL academic to be awarded an NIHR Research Professorship. "It's really exciting, it's the flagship award from the NIHR."

Amelle Ra and Samuel Latham (Class of 2019)

Amelle and Sam have penned a careers guidance book to support student doctors in their career choices. "Being enthusiastic, making good contacts and having the right attitude on placement is key."

Brian Boyd (Class of 1972)

Brian had no idea he would go into surgery and certainly no plans to end his career as Chief of Plastic Surgery at UCLA. " Pursue your dreams and take advantage of opportunities that present themselves (as they will) to achieve your goals."

Steven Toh (Class of 2022)

Dr Steven Toh brought the house down at the Class of 2022 graduation ceremony with a heart-warming tale about his patient Grace. He’s now touching more patients’ lives as an FY1 doctor on the Specialised Foundation Programme in Newcastle.

Liz Hare (Class of 1992)

Liz has kept in close contact with her fellow graduates over the years. "So many things have stuck with me from my time in Liverpool. The welcoming attitude of the city and its people and the willingness to help train student doctors."

Sam Ramsay Smith (Class of 1971)

Sam has always shunned convention and followed his heart in a career spent in the pursuit of service to others, with a generous helping of fun! "I hope I have demonstrated that a career in medicine can be fun as well as very rewarding. Few careers can provide more fulfilment."

Shannon Collings (Class of 2022)

Shannon Collings is an FY1 Doctor at Warrington Hospital, currently working in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Her first six months on the job have taught her the value of teamwork, and a god cup of tea!

Dr Caroline Condon (Class of 1972)

Caroline was devastated when she failed her finals at the first attempt. Little did she know destiny was playing a hand and would set her on a course that would change her life and career. "I learned that when one fails it’s important to get up, hold one’s head high and carry on."

Dr Peter Kent (Class of 1972)

After graduating, Peter completed vocational training, passed the MRCGP and set out as a GP, before moving on to different chapters through Aviation Medicine and the Prison Medical Service. "During my career I have learnt not to be afraid of change."

Dr Catherine Broun (Class of 1972)

Catherine Broun is still practising as a GP in the small town of Devonport, Tasmania (population 25,00) where she was named Citizen of the Year in 2022 for her dedication to the local community, providing health and wellbeing services for the past almost 50 years.

Dr Harry Barrowclough (Class of 1972)

A move to the Netherlands in 1974 proved decisive for Harry Barrowclough in countless ways, including a fulfilling career in gynaecological pathology, a PhD at the University of Amsterdam and true love.

Mr Mike Beck (Class of 1972)

From dreams of being a doctor at sea through general medicine and neurology to dermatology, Mike Beck has found a way to fulfil his childhood dreams of travel, trusting in fate and the advice of his parents to guide his path.

Dr Lucille Abrahams (nee Dorn) Class of 1972

Lucille Abrahams believes in the importance of teamwork and interdisciplinary learning in shaping a medical career, whatever specialty you are considering going into, and is a great advocate for general practice and the opportunities it gives to be a part of your patients’ life history.

Keith Wilkinson (Class of 1982)

School Alumnus Keith Wilkinson tells all in a brand-new book covering his career as an anaesthetist from medical school through specialty training and into his consultant position on the Isle of Man.

Grahame Meadows (Class of 1960)

Grahame Meadows became a consultant anaesthetist in 1966 at the now Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital in Broadgreen where he carried out a lot of ground-breaking work including the introduction and training of Perfusionists.

Julian Marsden (Class of 1981)

Julian went into Medicine as he wanted a career where he could help people. After graduating from Liverpool he became a GP and relished the degree of autonomy it offers to help you manage your work-life balance. 

John O’Donnell (Class of 1981)

John thanks Liverpool for giving him five great years as a student and a career he thoroughly enjoyed, which was spent almost entirely in the Liverpool area. He reminisces on his time at medical school as he and his classmates celebrate just over 40 years since graduation. 

Kaylea Clark (2017)

Kaylea has maintained strong links with the School since graduating – as a clinical examiner, educator and Academic Fellow. "Liverpool chose me, and it’s been stuck with me ever since!"
