Preparing for success: MSc Advanced Marketing

Dr Mohamed Maher, Director of Studies, shares advice as you prepare for the start of your master's programme.

Mohamed Maher

Congratulations on securing a place on our new MSc Advanced Marketing programme.

We are delighted that you have chosen to study with us and are looking forward to welcoming you to our thriving learning and research community at the University of Liverpool Management School in the autumn.

My name is Dr Mohamed Maher and I am a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Marketing and the Director of Studies for the MSc Advanced Marketing programme.

I hold a PhD in Marketing, which I completed here at the University of Liverpool and an MSc in Business Administration from Cairo University, Egypt. I have more than 12 years of experience in teaching in Higher Education in Egypt and the UK, and my research interests include multichannel and omnichannel service touchpoints, online and social media service encounters, using robots and AI in service delivery and qualitative digital research methods in marketing (e.g., netnography).

The MSc Advanced Marketing programme has been carefully designed to provide you with a robust understanding of the commerciality and strategic underpinnings of this creative and fast-paced industry. The programme will provide you with expert knowledge of the academic and practical aspects of this vibrant discipline. We aim to future-proof your learning and employability across fields such as marketing analytics, sustainability, social media marketing, entrepreneurship, consumer culture, and design thinking. You will also receive rigorous training in critical analysis, contemporary marketing theory, and creative thinking.

You will then have the opportunity to culminate this learning in your final dissertation at the end of the programme which may take the form of an academic piece of research of your choosing, or instead be more applied in scope as a lengthier piece of analytical writing connected with direct business outcomes.

You can learn through your own curiosity, following up and exploring topics that particularly interest you. You can learn by reflecting on your own daily consumer experiences, for instance, and by reading the news from multiple sources. Of course, being part of and understanding culture and zeitgeist is key for a strong marketeer.

You can also learn a lot from asking questions. Ask if you do not understand something. Ask if you find something interesting and want to know more. Ask questions of your tutor and ask questions of your fellow students – they will have different and valuable perspectives. Ask questions of yourself – why do I think that? What could I do differently? And of course, ask me if you need any help or support.

I am looking forward to meeting you all and welcoming you to the programme! In the meantime, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me via: M.Hammad@liverpool.ac.uk if you have any questions or queries about the programme.
