What course are you currently studying?
I am currently pursuing the MSc Finance and Investment Management at the University of Liverpool.
Why did you choose to study a master’s at the University of Liverpool Management School?
The University of Liverpool is one of the founding members of the Russell Group, the reputation is undoubted in the country and is known for high-quality education, experienced faculty, and successful alumni across the years.
The Management School has triple accreditation of AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS which enhances the credibility of the degree I am pursuing.
Liverpool is a city which is fun, culturally rich and relaxed at the same time which was important for me to choose as I was moving countries and wanted to move to a place I could call home. Accordingly, choosing the University of Liverpool Management School was the wisest option!
What’s the best thing about studying your programme?
MSc FIMM offers specialisation in the field of Finance and Investment with a detailed curriculum drawn extensively from the CFA programme, which is going to prosper my career in the direction I am hoping for.
How do the facilities in the University and the Management School help you with your studies?
The University has numerous facilities to support studies and their wellbeing. The stunning libraries were no less than a home during the lengthy exam periods and having Abercromby Square to relax next to it is perfect!
The Management School has a ‘Starbucks’ inside which is a winner when you are a little late to the classes but want to grab a bite to eat.
Moving onto the McKenzie trading suite, this facility is one of a kind with access to Bloomberg and an infinite amount of data for the research during your final project and during the various challenges that are carried out throughout the year for students to prosper.
What kind of support do you get from academic staff and tutors?
As a university student it is important that there is immense support from the faculty, and at I couldn’t ask for more at the Management School.
Our professors were with us every step of the way, from delivering amazing lectures or clarification of doubts and even guiding us in relation to career prospects. Supervision prior to exams and feedback later was a necessity to gauge my progress. The additional office hours have come in handy when academic support was needed.
Have you accessed any of the support services available to you, such as the School’s postgraduate careers team? If so, how did you find the service?
ULMS PGT Careers (exclusively for Management School students), The Career Studio (for all University of Liverpool students), and the IAG (International Advice and Guidance) have organised amazing seminars over the year that has helped me better understand the job market in the UK, what steps I should be taking during the job hunt, how my visa affects me and what are the prospects available. Attending these seminars has clarified so much ambiguity and made the path ahead of me clearer.
What do you enjoy most about the whole experience and what value has that added?
I am a member of Enactus Liverpool and during the initial months, we had a trip to Manchester which was a Feedback Summit to all the amazing ongoing projects under Enactus at the University. It was very insightful and being held at one of the big insurance companies, we were able to see the offices from inside and get astonishing pieces of advice from the Enactus alumni, now working in these big companies.
How do you believe undertaking master’s study will help your career prospects?
There is no doubt that this extensive 12-month programme is going to help me professionally as I have developed numerous skills over the period along with a deep understanding of the academic concepts, which is the ultimate mix that the job market is after.
Undertaking a master’s degree has also helped me evolve as a person with new responsibilities to juggle and that is assisting me not only personally but professionally, as these soft skills are the new qualifications that hiring managers prefer!
What advice would you give to anybody considering master’s study?
The only advice I would like to give to anyone considering master’s study is to be a ‘sponge’! Absorb as much as you can from this vast ocean of knowledge, culture, and experiences. Every moment during the programme is worth absorbing for you to grow and flourish into a new individual.
