Day Three: FIMBA in Madrid

Whilst studying at Liverpool, Liverpool and Football Industries MBA (FIMBA) students are invited to attend an international trip which is included in their fee. Find out what our FIMBA students got up to on day three of their trip:

Date: Tuesday 31 January 2023
Places visited: CD Leganés and Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

With the buzz and excitement of the last two days still filling the air, day three kick started with the group listening to the Management School’s Kieran Maguire on the BBC's Wake up to Money on the radio! As part of Kieran’s interview, Kieran provided financial insights on the new English Premier League's deal with the digital trading card platform, Sorare.

The first stop of day three was CD Leganés, a football club in Segunda División located less than 20 kilometres from Madrid. The FIMBA students were granted privileged access which started with observing the first team's training session. The session was followed by a tour of the facilities and a session on data and analytics which has become an integral part of professional sports in which athletes and teams look for advantages.

Sergio Martos Varela was on hand to look after the group and share his experience especially discussing how data and analytics were at the forefront of CD Leganés's approach, particularly in the areas of training, injury prevention, loading, and much more. The tech was impressive and even for a club in Segunda División, gathering data and developing training and medical analytics seems to be the norm. Our warmest thanks to

The next stop was back to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Two days prior, the FIMBA students experienced Real Madrid versus Real Sociedad but this time they got to see the de- and re-construction of the Bernabéu. The group went on a tour of the stadium and listened to Carlos Carrión, the External Advisor for the Stadium Remodeling Project at Real Madrid, talk about the plans for the stadia to become the world’s most versatile allowing the stadium to be used on non-match days ensuring no harm comes to the pitch.
