Why did you decide to study an MBA?
I decided to pursue an MBA to deepen my industry knowledge and enhance my expertise. I also aimed to develop my leadership abilities and build a network with MBA candidates and alumni from diverse countries.
Having worked primarily in South Korea, except for an internship in Slovenia, I was eager to gain international experience, particularly in the United Kingdom, a country renowned for football.
Why did you choose the Management School?
I chose the Football Industries MBA (FIMBA) programme at Management School because it is the world's only Football Industries MBA.
Additionally, it offers the opportunity to develop essential management skills such as leadership and international business, alongside specialized knowledge in the football industry.
What do you feel has been the most rewarding element of the programme?
The most rewarding aspect has been the opportunity to deepen my academic understanding of the football industry. Additionally, while I would have struggled to build a global network if I had stayed in Korea, I am now able to establish connections within the football industry all over the world.
Although it’s still early in the semester and I’ve only met one guest speaker, I believe that meeting a variety of guest speakers in the future will be the most rewarding part of the programme.
What do you do when you are not studying?
I spend time with MBA candidates, going to pubs or watching football matches together. Recently, we watched a Liverpool FC Women's match at Anfield.
I've also been volunteering as a Halls Sports Activator, promoting sports activities and supporting the running of sports events.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying an MBA?
An MBA is more demanding than many anticipate. It’s important to approach an MBA not as a temporary escape, but as a serious commitment to personal and professional growth.
Before pursuing this journey, I encourage you to carefully consider your motivations and set clear goals. Having a defined purpose will be essential for maximizing your growth for a year.
What have you learned from the guest speakers so far?
The former CEO of Everton FC, Robert Elstone, provided valuable insights into the management of Everton FC.
I gained essential knowledge about the UK football industry and the future of the Premier League.
What skills and knowledge do you feel you have developed?
While I didn't have a strong background in finance, the ‘Managing Financial Resources’ module helped me develop a better understanding of financial concepts.
In other modules, we have a weekly group activity that involves creating PowerPoint slides in 60-90 minutes and presenting for 15 minutes.
This was challenging at first, but it significantly improved our presentation, research, and critical thinking skills.
What aspects of the programme have you enjoyed the most?
It's totally normal to chat about football with FIMBA candidates and professors every day. As someone who wants to work in the football industry, I love talking and learning about football.
Even though I've worked at a professional football club in Korea before, studying it in FIMBA is a whole different ball game. Lectures and case studies help me understand the bigger picture of the football industry.
I'm looking forward to visiting the headquarters of FIFA and UEFA next year. I believe it will be a truly memorable experience.
What are you enjoying most about living in Liverpool?
Liverpool is a city known for football, so I really enjoy watching football games. There are many sightseeing places, but my favourite is definitely the Royal Albert Dock where I often go for a walk.
