Centre for Sustainable Business hosts one-day symposium
The Centre for Sustainable Business recently hosted a one-day symposium ‘Advancing Sustainable Business in Uncertain Times: Strategy for Effective Decision Making’ at the Management School on Wednesday 14 June 2023.
The hybrid event was a collaboration between the University of Liverpool’s Centre for Sustainable Business and the Institute for Risk and Uncertainty and focused on the latest research evidence from expert researchers on how businesses can tackle risk and uncertainty while successfully achieving their sustainability goals.
While environmental, social and legislative changes put pressure on organisations to take an urgent ‘business-not-as-usual’ approach, businesses are faced with little practical guidance on how to effectively manage the risks involved in their transition to eco-centric and socially-just models.
This challenge requires organisations to rethink their operational models with difficult questions, such as 'How do we account for social and environmental risks? To what extent does our organisation consider the impact on people’s lives that result from our decisions?
The symposium focussed on addressing these questions by exploring the intersection of risk, uncertainty, decision-making and sustainability in business.
The interactive workshop brought together experts in sustainability and risk uncertainty to consider how business leaders can integrate sustainability risks into decision-making processes.
Delegates heard from several keynote speakers from leading academics and industry experts and were also allowed to participate in interactive discussions to share their experiences. Speakers included: Professor Scott Ferson from the University of Liverpool, Professor Jo Meehan from the University of Liverpool Management School, Jeremy Nicholls from the United Nations Development Programme, Professor Elizabeth Maitland from the University of Liverpool and AI-Sight, Professor Charlie Cai from the University of Liverpool Management School, and Damian Meyers from Clan Contracting Limited.
